We at the Independent Gazette are excited to announce a unique partnering with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Veterans Multicare Alliance (NEPA VMA) to bring the Veteran of the Month program to Gazette readers. This column is designed to recognize local veterans, in addition to being a conduit for any veterans needing assistance, having questions, or looking for guidance or help in working through the copious quantities of red tape the veterans must navigate on a regular basis. Please feel free to contact the organization, located at 71 West Northampton Street, Wilkes Barre, 18701. Their phone number is (570) 706-2066. We encourage the public to contact the Gazette or the NEPA Veteran Multicare Alliance with any story, information, or question, as we’ll be highlighting such community input monthly. We’ll also be publishing notice of events of particular interest to vets.

Ask the Vep Rep: April 2014
First, I would like to know if you and I are related. My great grandmother’s marriage name was Margaret Schimelfenig, and she resided in the Keyser Valley section of Scranton! My question: Am I eligible to be buried in a military cemetery? I served from 1955 to 1959 in the US Army, with two years of active duty.
Ask the Vet Rep: March 2014
I joined the Army Reserves in 1957. I spent six months in active duty and seven and a half years in the active Reserves. Am I considered a veteran?

Thank you for submitting your question to Ask the Vet Rep. Your question on property tax is a great one. In Pennsylvania, you are eligible to apply for that benefit if you meet the requirements, and based on what you submitted, your disability is 50 percent, but would need to be 100 percent (total and permanent), as assigned by the Veterans Administration. Also, the Veteran has to have served during a period of war, as defined by Congress, and have an income below the threshold amount. I hope this helps in your tax planning.
In honor of Veterans Day 2013 we introduce our Vet of the Month: Joseph F Tunis
I had the great honor of sitting and talking with Joseph F. Tunis, a WWII veteran from Scranton, for our new monthly segment, Vet of the Month. It always makes me feel so blessed when I get the opportunity to talk to a veteran who has served this country so honorably and loyally.
Ask the Vet Rep! September 2013
I’m proud to say that my Grandfather is a World War II vet. He served in Europe and was involved in 5 major battles including D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He recently discovered that his medals have been stolen from his home. Since he will be turning 90 in September, I wanted to see if I could get him a copy of his military record and replacement medals.
