Money buys everything, including, it would seem, the allegiance of Senator Robert (“Bob”) Casey (D-PA) to militant Islam.

The Agony of Reading Failure

If you do not learn to read and you live in America, you probably will not make it in life, or reach your full potential. Consider that reading serves as the major avenue to learning about people, about history, social studies, the language arts, science, mathematics, and the other content subjects that must be mastered in school. When children do not learn to read, their general knowledge, their spelling and writing abilities, and their vocabulary development suffer in kind. Said more bluntly, reading proficiency serves as the major foundational skill for all school based learning, and without it, the chances for academic and occupational success are limited indeed.
Favoring a minimum increase to the minimum wage

It’s not about socialism or communism or Nazism . . . It’s about providing a fair, livable wage for people who for whatever reason lack the ability or opportunity to further themselves.
In defense of individual liberty: Luzerne County councilman weighs in on county chicken ordinance matter

As an elected official sworn to uphold the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I believe it would be a constitutional violation to infringe on a person’s inherent and indefeasible rights to not allow someone to acquire property, e.g., chickens, to pursue one’s own happiness. Who am I to tell our responsible neighbors and constituents what they can or can’t have on their lands, especially when it is not harming anyone else in their community? It reeks of our county becoming a “nanny state” and takes away their freedoms as taxpaying citizens of our county, Commonwealth and freedoms of living in the United States of America. By doing so we limit individuals’ happiness to love a pet or pets and/or limit their ability to pursue healthier and organic sources of food for their family.
Letter to the Editor: On Obama’s immigration declaration
The President’s first responsibility is to the people of the United States of America, and to honor his oath of office, but this President has shown over and over again that he has no honor, is not truthful, and is not trustworthy!
Letter to the Editor: A job well-attempted by NASA
A rocket launched by NASA from Virginia recently with intention of delivering supplies to the International Space Station malfunctioned and went down across the Virginia waterfront with quite the spectacular light show. This, much to the chagrin of the Russians, Chinese, French, Germans, Indians, etc. etc. etc. who seem to have little problem getting even a bottle rocket off the ground.
Letter to the Editor: An affirmation of the Globe store purchase proposal
I read about Commissioner O’Malley’s idea to buy the Globe store. What a sensible idea. It is convenient, close to all other businesses, and would save the county money, instead of wasting money on leases.
Letter to the Editor: Political correctness and its adherents
PC (political correctness) is a technique of treachery and control by those of severe prejudice with a totalitarian mindset. PC is, in short, horse hockey.
Letter to the Editor: An excerpt from Thomas Paine’s “The Crisis”
THESE are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in a crisis, shrink from the service of his country: but he who stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: ‘tis dearness only that gives everything its value.
A Prisoner on the Ladder

It is very expensive and difficult to uncover police and prosecutorial misconduct. What makes the news are only a few very rare instances where the violations were caught on camera to prove the abuse. Most all cases of abuse of rights and privileges go unnoticed. Most government civil rights agencies are not allowed to investigate or are deterred from investigating violations involving an accused person. Public defenders are not given the resources or time to investigate these violations. If those offences are not clear and in the open, they cannot challenge them.
