Press Release: Tony George responds to Mayor Leighton’s decision not to seek re-election

“Today, Tom Leighton confirmed what many suspected — he would not seek a fourth term as Mayor of the City of Wilkes-Barre. I truly believe this decision is in the best interests of the City.
“I respect Tom Leighton as a person. The simple fact is, by any measure, the Leighton Administration has failed the City of Wilkes-Barre on the most important issue. That vital issue, of course, is law and order — the safety and welfare of the citizens of Wilkes-Barre.
“So as we look forward to the upcoming mayoral election, the choices are clear. Voters who want a fourth term of the Leighton Administration should vote for Councilman George Brown. Councilman Brown supported Tom Leighton’s Administration in lock-step.
“As a member of Wilkes-Barre City Council, I stood up to the Leighton Administration and casted ‘no’ votes when that was the right thing to do. As a former police officer and Chief of Police in the City of Wilkes-Barre, I am prepared to bring that same determination to reallocate resources, and make Wilkes-Barre a safer and better place to live and work.
“I look forward to a spirited campaign.”
