Ask the Vep Rep: April 2014

Dear Mr. Schimelfenig,

First, I would like to know if you and I are related. My great grandmother’s marriage name was Margaret Schimelfenig, and she resided in the Keyser Valley section of Scranton! My question: Am I eligible to be buried in a military cemetery? I served from 1955 to 1959 in the US Army, with two years of active duty.

Sincerely,

Gerard Jerry Michaels

Hi Jerry,

We indeed may be related, as my family is from the Scranton area. As for your question: Yes, you are entitled to be buried in a military cemetery since you served, provided you have an honorable discharge from active duty.

Thank you,

Kerry
